General Job Descriptions

MATE: This position reports directly to the Master of the vessel, and assists in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel, and is responsible for overseeing and directing the crew in their respective deck duties. It is the responsibility of the Mate to see that all deck operations and procedures are carried out in accordance with approved company policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:       Mate's License - 500 Ton Oceans with Towing Endorsement, FCC Radio License, MMD Card, Progressive experience on outside towing vessels (i.e. other than inland waters).

SECOND MATE: This position reports directly to the Master of the vessel, and assists in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel, and is responsible for overseeing and directing the crew in their respective deck duties. It is the responsibility of the Mate to see that all deck operations and procedures are carried out in accordance with approved company policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications: Mate's License -  200 Ton Near Coastal with Towing Endorsement, Progressive experience on outside towing vessels (i.e. other than inland waters.), Automated Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA) radar endorsement required.

CHIEF ENGINEER: The Chief Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of all vessel machinery and equipment according to approved company policy and procedures, and for the directing of the Assistant Engineer, Oiler/Dayman in the performance of his assigned duties. This position reports directly to the master while onboard and to the Area Port Engineer/Area Port Captain while in port.

Minimum Qualifications:  4000HP DDE License   Four years progressive experience sailing as an Engineer with at least two as Chief Engineer, or equivalent experience.  Two years experience on EMD and/or CATERPILLAR engines of at least 1,500hp, or other appropriate equivalent experience. MMD Card.

ASSISTANT ENGINEER: The Assistant Engineer works directly for and with the Chief Engineer, assisting with daily operation and maintenance of vessel machinery and equipment. The Assistant carries out all instructions from the Master and Chief Engineer, and assists other crew members as requested in the performance of their duties.

Minimum Qualifications: 1000HP DDE License, one year or progressive equivalent experience with EMD and/or CATERPILLAR engines. One-year experience on towing vessels preferred.

STEWARD COOK:  The Cook/Steward is responsible for preparing and providing meals for all crew members daily at appropriate times. The Cook/Steward also maintains a high standard of cleanliness and good housekeeping in galley and food storage areas, and inventories, orders, procures, stows, and rotates stores as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications: One-year sea experience on any classification of vessel preferred. One year documented cooking experience preferred. MMD Card.
